| Routes approach Great Gable from all directions but my favourite routes on Great Gable are the "south traverse" 
and the NW approach. These two can
be combined along with Kirk Fell in
a circuitous way to avoid descending any steep scree routes and also
avoiding
the awful slog up the SW slopes of Kirk Fell. Starting from the Wasdale
Head avoid the equally hard slog up Gavel Neese and pass to the south
of
Great Gable heading for Sty Head. At the stretcher-box zig-zag back on
to the south traverse, (exposed, care needed) passing Napes Needle on
the way. Ascend to the summit of Gable
from Beck Head, (slight scramble), returning by the same route to
continue
on up rocks
to the extensive summit of Kirk Fell.
Swinging north (in mist follow old fence posts across the summit) the
route scrambles (easy) down the west edge of Kirkfell Crags to Black
Sail
Pass and then on down into Mosedale to return to the Wasdale Head. |
