Wasdale show 2000. The most uncommercialised shepherds' meet in Lakeland.

Many local words have Viking origins:- tarn, dale, fell and beck. Wasdale "Vatndalr" means dale with a lake, making the "water" in the modern "Wastwater" (lake-water) rather redundant.
The local herdwick sheep are also often said to have been brought in by the Vikings but some dispute this. The Herdwick sheep are "heafed", that is they know their home ground on the fells and do not stray from it.
